type foundries

of course there are thousands of places to buy fonts online, and maybe even more places to get free fonts. below are a handful of reputable places with consistently good quality typeface designs.

see also “diverse perspectives in typeface design” for more specific listings if you are looking for typefaces with a particular cultural relevance or simply want to support particular people groups.

distributors large and small

adobe fonts
for kcai students, many fonts here are free to use as part of your adobe creative cloud license through the school.

fontshop

myfonts
myfonts is a gargantuan distributor. be warned – there is as much sketchy, silly, novelty stuff here as there is good stuff. be judicious in your looking. they do, however, run amazing sales if you are on their email list. sometimes new fonts are introduced at up to 80% off retail.

village
a small distributor of boutique foundries.

youworkforthem
youworkforthem sells a wide range of fonts; stock photos and video; graphic packs like custom brushes, patterns, and textures; mock-ups; and other such goodies. lots of hip stuff available here.

font testing platforms

fontstand
highly recommended! from their site: “fontstand is a font discovery platform that allows you to test and use high-quality fonts on all platforms. Rent fonts by the month with a dedicated app for macOS and Windows or start the monthly subscription with the new iPadOS app.
