multimedia experience

kansas city art institute // senior 1 // 2017

the principles of screen design, interactivity and navigation as well as sound and motion in graphic multimedia will be applied to two digital projects. this will serve as a capstone course, with pre-existing knowledge of digital spaces enabling faster and more complex generation of concepts.

OBJECTIVES

[you will be graded on how much/well you...]

  1. apply user research to inform both your concept and visual design

  2. apply knowledge of interface design and information architecture concepts to projects at an advanced level

  3. apply knowledge of linear narrative skills [editing, motion graphics/typography, sound, animation] to projects at an advanced level

  4. balance usability with surprise/innovation/sense of play

  5. plan screen-based systems that rely on and respond to user input

  6. speculate, aka futurecast, the possibilities of interaction design

  7. create the conditions for a holistic experience that occurs at both the component and system level

  8. further develop critical thinking and articulation skills in informal class discussions and formal critiques [aka class participation]

project 1: interactive a/v assemblage

lecture: interaction models
lecture: wireframes

process activity: the properties of physical objects can inspire new thinking on the possibilities of on-screen actions, compositions, site architecture and flow between screens in a user journey through a process or task.

project 2: virtu/real relationship building

project note: after a couple of failed attempts to connect with outside audiences for this project, i redirected students’ efforts to design speculative interfaces for autonomous cars, specifically waymo, google’s self-driving vehicle, currently in the testing phase. at the time of this project, little to no visual interfaces had been designed for this technology, giving students a prime opportunity to envision what a door-to-door experience might look like.

process activity: research and report on emerging techlologies
